The water reservoir of Castrelo de Miño closed its doors in 1969 after five years of works. This project found a strong popular opposition and faced confrontations with the neighbours that were oppressed and silenced, and ended up flooding one of the most fertile valleys of Galicia.

It occupies a surface of 790 hectares with a maximum storage of sixty hectares.

The huge amount of water in the reservoir contrasts with the morphology of the channel in the starting point of the Miño, which is a straight canyon in a stretch of more than 2 kilometers until it opens in the river Avia mouth connecting with the next reservoir, the last before the Atlantic, in Frieira.

Although it was a disaster for the area, the huge quantity of water in the reservoir has allowed the creation of a new ecosystem auspicious for the practice of nautical sports.
